Copywriting Revival?
Is Copywriting the New Band Wagon?
A couple of posts ago I mentioned I was back on Twitter.
Twitter is what you make of it. It all comes down to who you follow and what you consume.
I’ve fallen into the copywriting crowd of people.
I’m not sure if more people are talking about it. Or if it’s this thing people are jumping onto. But there does seem to be a bit of circle jerking going on.
This is the problem when you follow a lot of the same kind of people.
It’s what happened when you have a podcast and you follow all these other podcasts. Everyone is shouting about their podcast. There seems to be very few non podcasters there.
It’s a slippery slope. One you can find yourself in.
What’s the Appeal of Copywriting?
Like most things there are some people that make a lot of money from doing it.
You don’t need much to do it. The ability to write. The ability to talk to people. That’s about it.
It’s a great skill to have. It helps you convey messages easily. Get people interested in different things. Also make people take action.
A lot of what is online is about making people buy something.
While that is the case for many. It can help with all aspects of your life. From family to work. To emails and any other written thing.
Being able to communicate well is a good skill to have.
How Much is Repeated?
There are only so many ways to explain the same sort of concepts.
Once you go down the rabbit hold of copywriting on Twitter it seems a lot of people are telling the same advice. Sometimes with their own spin on it.
But still. There is only so much you can consume.
It’s much better to do.
Good Resources
I’ve only consumed a little bit of information on copywriting. So this is my opinion on what you should check out.
These sources of information make me think about how I write. And also view ads or written copy with a different perspective.
It makes me think if it is good or not.
It makes me wonder what they are trying to achieve. Is it working?
Books to Read
- The Boron Letters
- Gary Halbert was this direct mailing guy who had a lot of success. But also found himself in jail. He wrote a bunch of letters to his son. These are the letters. They are free to read.
- Ogilvey on Advertising
- Published in the 80’s this book covers a lot of advertising knowledge from one of the best in the field. David Ogilvey gives all sorts of knowledge covering all aspects of advertising.
If you have another book that you like around copywriting. Let me know by leaving a comment below.
Twitter Accounts to Check Out
- @Grammarhippy
- Lots of great tips and actionable content from George Ten. Comes across as someone that knows his stuff.
- @jakevictor_
- Another account with great content. Also has a god email you can sign up for. Super long emails. Full of text and learning material. Very different to any other email I’ve subscribed to.
That’s it for my resources.
There is a lot out there. But finding good stuff that is original can be hard sometimes.
Especially in the echo chamber that Twitter sometimes becomes.
My Thoughts on Copywriting
I like it.
And I want to learn more about it.
One thing that I find interesting is the idea around keeping things simple and easy to read. Something I try and do in my own writing.
Change of Thinking
I always thought you needed to write with bigger words. More technical or fancier than writing like how you talk.
I know people that write big long blocks of text.
They think it makes them come across better. It doesn’t. And it can be hard to read.
Copywriting is about keeping things simple. You want to get people’s attention and get them to do something.
Learning More
As I said at the start of the post there is a lot of information out there.
Some good. Some not so good.
The thing I do like is that to practice or learn you can do it with a pen and a piece of paper. It’s up to you to put in the work.
The Dream
Copywriting sells the dream of making a lot of money and doing it from anywhere.
That’s a good dream.
It also seems that anyone can do it. Well if you believe everything you read online.
In Conclusion
It’s a great skill to have.
It’s more than just writing great words. It’s knowing your audience. Having the research and knowing human psychology makes an average copywriter into a great one.
It can help you in all sorts of ways.
Don’t get too bogged down in the information out there. Make sure you do something. This is my key advice for anything.
Information overload or consuming all the time is something to be mindful of.
