New Job Time

It’s been a while since I’ve had a new job. Over 10 years in fact. I talked about that a little here. I also talked about the process of finding a new job in this post and this one.

New Job

I got the job I applied for that I talked about before. That was the goal and I achieved it.

Overall I feel this was a good move on my part. Having the heads up about the future of the past job helped me think about the future and what I wanted to be doing. While I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do I’m glad I had the choice and wasn’t forced into a position where I had to take anything just to survive.

New Jobs Can Feel Hard

New jobs can feel hard. Especially when they are in an industry you know nothing about and are doing things that are different for you.

The key I think to remember is it’s OK to feel like you are a fish out of water. In some ways you are.

As long as you pay attention, learn and try your best I think you will be OK.

How it’s Going

I’m 4 weeks into this new job.

It’s been going ok. Well I think it’s been going pretty good to be honest. I’m feeling more comfortable in what I am doing, I’m learning a bunch and the people I work with are all super nice.

I think it’s probably the smoothest it could have gone.

Things that Have Changed

When it comes to a new job there are some things that change. Here’s what’s changed for me.

Car Parking

The new job is in the city centre. There are many different places to park. But they all cost money. I’ve never had to pay for parking before.

And when you think you are parked in an OK place, you could be wrong. Some idiots broke my back window again. But didn’t steal the car this time.

Not Working Weekends + Other working time

For the last 10 years I had a random but consistent work roster that had a 3 week rotation. Every 3rd week I would get the weekend off. Now I have all the weekends off.

It was also “shift” work. So I would have random time off, as well as always having time available for the first half of the day, or for the the 2nd half of the day.

On paper it all seemed pretty good. Working the hours we did was a bit hard after 10 years of it.

Having to do actual work

My old job was weird when you looked into it. More so when you were doing it. After being in the new job the last 4 weeks I’ve realised the old job was some travel with about 1 hours worth of work, and about a 7 hour lunch break.

The new job is busy all the time, with a 30 minute lunch break and 2 x 15 minute breaks.

There are positives and negatives to both of these scenarios.

Everyone is pleasant to deal with

The new job everyone is great to deal with and there are some passionate people working on things. There is also very low risk of dealing with super angry people that hate what you are doing.

Much better than the old job.

My Overall Current Outlook

If you aren’t working for yourself, which I think takes a special type of person to be able to do that. You really need to look at what you are going to be doing with your working time.

It’s a large chunk of your day. If you don’t like it, then what is the point. Find something else to do, upskill if possible, or be comfortable with what you have signed up to.

More Planning Needed

With my normal working hours now, I’ve really needed to fine tune my planning. From outside activities, family time and my many projects I have.

To be able to do things and be productive I need to really plan out my day. Figure what I am going to do.

In some ways I do find this very limited window of time to do things a bit better than the 7 hour lunch break most days.

Time will tell how it all pans out. But for now I’m happy with the change and what I am currently doing.
